So, I checked out the cost of living difference on Monstermoving.com, where they have one of those cost of living calculators to compare salaries in different cities:
Your Results:
Athens, Georgia $40,000
New York, New York $280,000
The cost of living in New York, New York is 600.0% higher than that of Athens, Georgia. A salary of $40,000 in Athens, Georgia has the same buying power that a salary of $280,000 has in New York, New York.
Wow. I don’t know if I even believe that number. That’s pretty ridiculous if it’s true. There’s no way that’s true… is it?
If so, it may be even longer before I’d consider moving up there. I knew it was quite expensive, but there’s no way…

Today: More drilling, more filling. Luckily, the next time I have to come in isn’t til September 16 or so. I am torn between my great appreciation for the incredibly complex and amazing technology that allows dentists to fix nearly any problem with 10% or less of the pain that would have resulted only 15 years ago and…well, my headache and jaw pain.

Things I need to do:
Read Atlas Shrugged (hmm, I wonder who suggested this)
Read Harry Potter book(s) (any suggestions for starters, folks?)
Finish reading The DaVinci Code and Treason (I’m not completely convinced that Ann Coulter isn’t a female Bill O’Reilly, and thus a target of my hatred. I still like her because she seems much more intelligent than O’Reilly, but time will tell if her vitriol is senseless and stupid like his.)
Get a job. This one is the most important, but I have no idea when it will happen. If anyone needs my resume, you can find it at garrettvonk.com
Brush and floss more. Yup, that’s what they tell me… I still have a headache from the drill, so it must be true.
Visit my parents. They’ve lived in their new house in Jupiter, Florida, for 2 weeks now and I still have yet to crash their party and track dirt on their floors. It’s bound to happen eventually.
Go camping. Hopefully, this will happen this weekend, since it’s a 3-day weekend and all.

I went to the dentist today. Several cavities. The biggest is already filled; the dentist had time to do it immediately. I am coming back tomorrow morning to take care of more. My lips are floppy and numb, which is always comical , as it’s hard to keep my morning coffee inside my mouth.

So, here I am working. What’s that, you think? Garrett got a job? Nope, just doing the same-old same-old at Communicating Services, helping out around here semi-full time until the work dries up (and it will soon).
Why does radio absolutely, positively SUCK?
I say this not in the elitist, snobby, alt-indy-smart rock tone that accompanies the permanent sneers of many Athens townies and other fans of independent music. I mean it in the genuine, respectful sentiment that has grown within me and now threatens to invoke a physical rage against my radio, causing me to rip out the FM tuner mechanism (gotta be just the FM, need talk radio).
I love music, I really do. Radio is just so. Damn. Repetitive. I understand completely the need to appease listeners who want to tune in and hear a song they like quickly, before hitting that dreaded dial for something else. But I hit that dial every time they play a song I heard 45 minutes ago on the same station.
